“We’re really awkward in photos.”
If I had £1 for every couple who told me this, I'd probably be writing this on a cruise with my golden retriever and moijto in hand. The good news? You don't need to know how to pose. You don't need to be naturally confident in front of a camera. And you definitely don't need to spend your wedding day worrying about where to put your hands. My job is to make photographs feel natural, not make you feel like you're modelling for a catalogue.
Forget about posing perfectly
Your wedding photographs don't need to look perfect. In fact, some of my favourite photographs are the ones where you're laughing, moving, looking at each other or completely forgetting I'm there. Instead of constantly asking you to pose, I'll give you simple prompts and let the moments happen naturally. Think walking, chatting, laughing and enjoying yourselves rather than standing stiffly and staring at the camera.
Spend time with each other
One of the easiest ways to look natural in photographs? Actually enjoy your wedding day. Hold hands. Hug each other. Whisper something ridiculous. Dance. Laugh. You don't need to perform for the camera. If you're genuinely having a good time, it shows.
You don't have to look at the camera
This is a big one. Not every photograph needs to be you both smiling directly at the lens. Looking at each other, looking around or laughing with your friends can create much more natural photographs. Some of the best moments happen when you're completely unaware of the camera. So relax!
Your photographer should help you feel comfortable
You shouldn't be expected to turn up on your wedding day already knowing how to pose. I'll guide you when you need it, but I'll also give you plenty of space to just be yourselves. If you're nervous, tell me. If you hate having your photograph taken, tell me. If you have a particular side you like better, tell me! The more I know, the easier it is for me to make the experience comfortable for you.
Give yourself permission to forget I'm there
You've spent months planning this day. Once it arrives, you deserve to actually enjoy it. Dance with your friends. Cry during the speeches. Laugh until your stomach hurts. Go and get another drink.Hug your gran. Throw some questionable shapes on the dance floor. I'll be there to capture it.
And if you're still nervous?
That’s okay! I offer couple and engagement shoots, so you can experience what it’s like to work with a photographer before your big day. We can work out any poses you may be nervous about, we can work slowly until you feel more confident with yourself and as a bonus you’ll have lovely photos!
